Why do widescreen LCDs hold different aspect ratio?

Widescreen LCD monitors are 16:10, but widescreen TVs are 16:9. How come?

Answer:

While TVs must be one and the same aspect ratio as the HD signals being sent which are 16:9, LCD monitors arn't really designed near TV in mind so they can use their own aspect ratio, and after carrying out tests, they decided on 16:10 because you can read 2 full page of text side by side on 16:10 not on 16:9
No valid good rationale.

The HDTV standards were defined as 16:9 back LCD TVs and widescreen monitors became popular.

LCD monitor resolutions are defined by the panel manufacturer and they want to get the most panel out of a single piece of glass. So to be exact going to depend on the size and the aspect ratio of both the mother glass and the panel.
